Chemical peeling is a simple form of skin rejuvenation procedure that promotes skin renewal in a safe, non-invasive way. All it entails is the application of the peeling agent to the face or other body part, and the skin will peel away from one to 14 days to expose brand new, blemish-free skin underneath. For this reason, it is the choice of many when it comes to removing unwanted spots such as skin discoloration, acne marks, and other skin blemishes. However, most people are unaware that the new skin tends to be fragile and prone to infection especially during the peeling period.
There are different kinds of chemical peels and your reaction to them may vary. If you are going through chemical peeling, be mindful of the following to safeguard against complications:
- Avoid picking at the peeling, scratching the skin, or tearing it off prematurely. Doing so could cause discoloration and make the skin prone to infection. This might occur because the regrowth of the skin in the damaged area may not be ready yet, thus giving you that pinkish, sensitive skin.
- Ensure that you thoroughly follow your healthcare provider’s instructions post-treatment. Do not wet your face immediately after the procedure and avoid applying topical ointments unless instructed to do so. This includes using the prescribed wash for reducing itchiness. If you are only instructed to wash your face with it twice a day, do not wash your face every time it itches, since doing so exposes your skin to excessive chemicals which may not hasten your skin’s regrowth.
- If you had a deep peel, ensure that you change the dressing and apply the creams and ointments provided by your physician as instructed. As much as possible, you should change the dressing at least once a day to ensure that the area is healing well.
- Avoid sun exposure, particularly during the first few days. If you must venture outdoors, then use sunscreen and wear a wide-brimmed hat. Your new skin is more prone to sun damage, so you should take care of it at all costs.
When it comes to skin rejuvenation and other beauty treatments, it is important that you follow your provider’s instructions to ensure that you will have a speedy and remarkable recovery. However, if you do experience pain and discomfort even after following these instructions, contact your provider immediately since your body may be reacting negatively to the peel other than expected.
